What is it?
The Urban Forest Project was originally conceived by AIGA's New York chapter in 2006, where banners created by top designers promoted environmental awareness in Times Square, one of the world's busiest, most emphatically urban intersections (see NYC project at urbanforestproject.org).
In its initial year, we're selecting a variety of local designers or teams of designers, illustrators, photographers, and artists to create banners promoting the week of events 22-27 April, 2007.
Banner Designs
Designers will use the form of the tree, or a metaphor for the tree, as the subject for banners to promote the week's events in downtown Portland. Together, the banners will create a forest of the light posts along our streets, reminding us of the power of working together to communicate and create change. As the main printed form of publicity around the initiative, banners will then be reincarnated as unique bags by Portland designer Queen Bee Creations, to be sold at auction. Proceeds will benefit Friends of Trees, pioneers of our own urban forests.
20 designers or design teams will be selected to work on the project. Please submit a short bio, with name, email, phone #, and 3-10 samples of work, to membership@portland.aiga.org by February 19. Preference will be given to AIGA members or member teams, but all designs will be considered. Designers will be contacted with templates and further detail no later than February 23, with final artwork to be completed by March 9.
