Meet the incoming and continuing board members. Connect with your fellow members or learn more about AIGA. Sign up for upcoming AIGA Portland events and help set the agenda. Bring some business cards and make new friends. Enjoy martinis and appetizers in one of Portland's coolest venues. This will be the last event for the 2003-4 programming year; don't miss it!

Special thanks to Vault Martini for hosting us; to Pinball Publishing for postcard and ticket printing; to Mindy Fulton for promotion design; and to Jessica Bernert for event coordination.

Get Out the Vote 2004: The power of design in a democracy

In our presidential elections, barely half of those Americans who are eligible to vote actually make it to the polls. What are the reasons for voter apathy and lack of civic responsibility? And can design be used to help solve the problem?

The purpose of this Get Out the Vote campaign is to encourage voter turnout. We invite current AIGA members to create a poster that will be on display in the AIGA online gallery. This gallery will also allow visitors to download and print these posters. This gallery will available on July 1, 2004, at which time AIGA members will be able to upload posters to the site. Visit the national site for more information.

Roundtable Results

As part of a national initiative to make AIGA a more valuable organization, AIGA Portland held a roundtable in March to get suggestions and feedback from our members. To find out what this year's participants had to say about the role of AIGA on a personal, community and national level, download the PDF available at the bottom of our web site home page.  We are always looking for suggestions and input on how AIGA Portland can better contribute to our community. Contact us at info@aiga.portland.org.

Visit our community events page and learn about local events of interest to the design community. AIGA Portland does not sponsor these events, but as your trusty hub for information on the design profession, we thought you ought to know about these things. If you have an event that you would like to have posted please contact events@portland.aiga.org. The programming chair evaluates all requests against our AIGA mission and if appropriate we will post the event to this section.

Design:Business, May 2004
Each month, professional and associate members receive Design:Business, containing articles on the practical issues of running a design practice. This month's topic:

Proposals
Most design firms perform services for clients on the basis of a written proposal. When signed by both parties, the proposal becomes a binding contract. An appropriate set of terms and conditions should be included in order to avoid confusion about the legal and financial aspects of the relationship. This article offers practical advice on the process of preparing a proposal and it discusses some of the important issues to be addressed in the "fine print."

Members can find the full text to this article and past archives online.

Gain: AIGA Business and Design Conference
AIGA's sixth biennial business and design conference is scheduled for October 1-3 in New York. "Gain" will demonstrate the value of designing as a strategic process that adds substantial value to business and organizations. Influential designers and visionary business leaders will describe how they have initiated fundamental change in their organizations, their industries, their product mix and their bottom line by making design part of their culture. Presentations will provide both designer and corporate views on the process and consequence of value created through fostering new knowledge, generating better ideas, cooperation, increased goodwill, effective problem solving, collaboration, community vitality, and, of course, beauty, effectiveness and ROI.

Register now! This conference is in the Equitable Center, which seats fewer than normally attend our business conferences, so seating will fill up early. Visit www.aiga.org/gain_conference_2004 for details.
