Be an AIGA Mentor with the Create, Don’t Hate! Program

Friday, September 4, 2009 — December 31, 2009 Continues through the end of 2009 Portland, Oregon

AIGA Portland is partnering with re:active, a local nonprofit, arts-education program for youths 15-19, on the local component of the Create, Dont Hate! program for Design Ignites Change.

We are looking for mentors to work one-on-one with youth to create billboards around the theme of tolerance for six two-hour sessions over an eight week period, at the designer’s studio. The kick-off meeting between all design mentors and mentees will be Sunday September 20th from 1-2:30pm, and the program will start in October.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?
AIGA member designers (or firms) who are…

  • comfortable with teenagers, either remember what it’s like to be one or have some of their own.
  • good at weeding out and refining ideas.
  • okay with letting someone else do the work. It should be the student’s ideas that are worked on and refined. If you want help in executing the design that is okay, but it needs to be a collaborative working session.

WHAT AM I COMMITTING TO?
The first mandatory meet-and-greet session is Sunday September 20th from 1-2:30pm.

Six, two-hour working sessions at the designer’s studio should be scheduled over 8 weeks (between October 7th and November 27th). The actual session dates are up to the student and mentor but will be best done in the hours after-school (4-6).

I’M IN! NOW HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Please email mentorship@portland.aiga.org by September 4 to apply. Include a short bio or resume, and link to web-based or PDF portfolio (for you or your studio). Feel free to ask questions, we want to get Portland’s best and brightest involved.

Approximately 5 candidates will be selected from the pool of applicants to participate. A background check will be required upon selection.
